Fairfield Metro Center Wetlands Mitigation

In progress, 2007 - The proposed project entails the redevelopment and remediation of a 35± acre “Brownfield” property and the construction of the Fairfield Metro Center (FMC) train station with 1500 vehicle commuter parking lot; the construction of approximately one million square feet of commercial and retail space including a hotel; plus parking facilities; and the construction of a new road linking Kings Highway to Black Rock Turnpike. Land-Tech’s services include the design of a 2.6 acre tidal, estuarine, freshwater transitional wetland system and large biofiltration systems which will serve as mitigation for impacts to regulated areas and act as stormwater treatment systems for runoff from the proposed development. Land-Tech, in addition to other firms on the design team, has provided support in the preparation of permit applications to local and federal agencies.

Protected Species Management

In progress, 2007 - In Consultation with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, a multi-year controlled burn was used to control woody vegetation from an upland meadow and allow Sand bramble (Rubus cuneifolius), a State Species of Special Concern to be maintained. This management effort is associated with a residential housing development on a 22 ±acre parcel along the Housatonic River. Other features include a walkway along a riparian community along the river which was enhanced with native vegetation.

Inland Wetlands Restoration

March, 2006 - The project involved restoring a 0.3± acre inland wetland system that was overgrown and comprised almost entirely of invasive species. The invasive species and top layers of wetland soil were removed. Hydric wetland soil was created, installed and graded back to previous grades including a seasonal pool. The wetland was replanted with native grasses typical of the region.

Roger Ludlowe Middle School - Linking BMPs and Education

December, 2003 - Developing a new middle school for 875 sixth through eighth graders on 32 acres of an existing 51 acre school campus in Fairfield provided the opportunity to restore historically impacted inland wetlands and watercourses. Working with design team Perkins-Eastman Architects, Land-Tech’s staff of engineers and wetland biologists was able to control and treat post-development storm water runoff from the site using natural systems. Also accomplished was the restoration of 320 lineal feet of riparian habitat formerly enclosed in a pipe, while preserving existing wetland habitat.

Bradley International Airport Wetlands Mitigation

2003 - Working for the State of Connecticut, Land-Tech Consultants, Inc. designed a wetlands mitigation plan to compensate for an expansion project at Bradley International Airport. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers procedures for wetlands mitigation were followed to design a 1.9 acre wetland from a previously agricultural area associated with the forested floodplain of Stony Brook. Existing hydrology of the area was altered to create areas of emergent marsh, scrub shrub wetlands, and a dendritic flow pit and mound system to enhance the wildlife value of the wetland system. Land-Tech provided site design, planting plans, construction monitoring, supervision, and success reporting. Project is completed and success monitoring has been finalized with the USACE.
